Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the only one planned for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At first, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to purchase john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level domains remained active.
